The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has presented cheques totalling two-point-three-two billion naira to families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers.
The beneficiaries, numbering two thousand, nine hundred and seventy-one, are covered under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
The presentation, held on Thursday, 3rd September 2026, at Force Headquarters in Abuja, covers insurance policy years from 2017/2018 to 2024/2025, including outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial payments.
Speaking during the presentation, IGP Disu described the exercise as an institutional responsibility to families of police officers who lost their lives in the service of the nation.
He said although no financial benefit could replace a lost loved one, the payments would provide practical support to affected families and reaffirm the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to their welfare.
The Inspector-General noted that police personnel continue to operate in a challenging security environment, making sacrifices in the line of duty across the country.
He assured families of fallen officers that the Force would continue to recognise their sacrifices and pursue legitimate avenues of support for their welfare and that of their dependants.
IGP Disu further reaffirmed welfare as a key priority of his administration, saying efforts would continue towards improving personnel welfare, working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and other legitimate benefits.
He directed the Force Insurance Unit to intensify sensitisation across police commands and formations to ensure officers and their families are adequately informed about their insurance benefits and how to access them.
The Force Insurance Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Lydia Ameh, commended the IGP for prioritising the resolution of outstanding insurance claims.
She said the progress recorded in recovering pending entitlements and strengthening claims administration would ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their legitimate benefits.
ACP Ameh also pledged the commitment of the Force Insurance Unit to improving the efficiency of the insurance process and protecting the interests of police families.
The IGP commended the Force’s insurance partners for their cooperation and urged them to ensure prompt settlement of legitimate claims.
He said timely payment of insurance benefits could serve as a vital lifeline to families who have lost their breadwinners.
The Nigeria Police Force says it remains committed to the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of its personnel and their families, while ensuring that the sacrifices of officers who lost their lives in service to the nation are not forgotten.
