The RAFIMAH Youth, Child Development and Social Impact Foundation has expressed concern over the reported death of 37 young miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.

In a statement, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Hon. Amb. Maimuna Raji Egigogo, mnipr, described the incident as tragic and called for a transparent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The Foundation said every person in custody has the right to life, dignity and humane treatment, irrespective of the allegations against them.

It therefore called on the relevant authorities to conduct an independent investigation, including appropriate medical and forensic examinations, to determine the actual cause of the deaths.

RAFIMAH Foundation also urged authorities to make the outcome of the investigation public and ensure that anyone found responsible for negligence or misconduct is held accountable in accordance with the law.

The organisation expressed particular concern over reports that some of the deceased may have been young persons, stressing the need for stronger protection mechanisms for children and vulnerable youths in detention.

It called for improved conditions in detention facilities, including adequate ventilation, medical screening, sanitation, decongestion and regular monitoring.

The Foundation also appealed for psychosocial support for the families of the deceased and appropriate assistance for dependants affected by the tragedy.

According to RAFIMAH Foundation, the incident highlights the need to address the economic circumstances that expose young people to hazardous activities such as unsafe artisanal mining.

It urged the Niger State Government and relevant agencies to strengthen youth empowerment programmes, skills acquisition, vocational training and access to safer livelihood opportunities.

The Foundation commended the Niger State Government for the measures announced following the incident, including the declaration of a mourning period and the establishment of an inquiry mechanism.

It urged all stakeholders to allow the investigation to proceed without interference and ensure that its recommendations are implemented.

RAFIMAH Foundation also appealed to the affected families and members of the public to remain calm and peaceful while the investigation continues.

The organisation extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Niger State, while reaffirming its commitment to the protection of children, empowerment of young people and promotion of safe communities.
