A female food vendor identified as Ammaye has reportedly been killed by a mob in Kasuwan Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, following an allegation that she made remarks considered offensive to Islam.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 30, 2026, after Ammaye had an argument with a young man said to be her nephew.

According to reports, the man allegedly joked that he wanted to marry her to “fulfil the Sunnah,” after which Ammaye reportedly made comments that some residents considered blasphemous.

The matter was subsequently brought before the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where the woman was questioned.

Reports indicate that she allegedly repeated the remarks during the questioning.

The District Head reportedly handed her over to security personnel for further investigation.

However, an angry crowd allegedly gathered and overpowered the security operatives before reinforcement could arrive.

The mob reportedly stoned Ammaye to death and subsequently set her body ablaze.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun.

Mr Abiodun said the police were working to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing and ensure they face prosecution.

The command condemned the alleged jungle justice and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The Chairman of Mariga Local Government Area, Abbas Adamu, also confirmed the incident and said calm had been restored in the area.

The incident has renewed concerns over mob justice, religiously motivated violence and the need to protect individuals accused of religious offences while investigations are conducted through lawful procedures.

The alleged comments attributed to the deceased have not been independently verified, while the circumstances surrounding the killing remain subject to police investigation.
