Yazid, the young boy who recently gained public attention after he was found engaging in artisanal mining, has been screened for a foreign scholarship by the Distinguished Senator Mohammed Sani Musa Scholarship Committee.
The screening, which took place yesterday, is part of efforts to provide Yazid with an opportunity to pursue formal education and develop his potential away from hazardous mining activities.
Yazid’s case attracted public attention amid growing concerns over the involvement of children and young people in artisanal mining, particularly following the recent deaths of suspected miners in Niger State.
The scholarship screening is expected to assess his educational background, academic potential and suitability for the scholarship programme.
The initiative by the Distinguished Senator Mohammed Sani Musa Scholarship Committee is also seen as an opportunity to support Yazid’s transition from mining to education and provide him with a safer pathway to achieving his aspirations.
The development has renewed calls for greater investment in education and youth empowerment, particularly for children and young people from communities where poverty and limited educational opportunities expose them to hazardous means of livelihood.
Further details on the outcome of the screening and the scholarship placement are expected to be announced by the committee.
