The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced a fresh investigation into allegations involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar following a petition by former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.

The petition, dated August 27, 2026, and received by the commission on September 1, seeks a review of the EFCC’s September 2006 report under former chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as well as a February 2010 report by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

The commission acknowledged receipt of the petition under reference number CR:3000/EFCC/HQ/SDC-2/VOL.3/398 and confirmed that an investigation had commenced.

As part of the process, Agbonayinma was invited to the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on October 12, 2026, where he formally adopted his petition and responded to questions from investigators for more than six hours.

Speaking to journalists, Agbonayinma said the allegations should not remain unresolved, stressing that the law should apply equally to all Nigerians, irrespective of their status.

The petition alleges that the EFCC’s earlier report indicated the possibility of prosecuting Atiku after his tenure as vice president, but no such prosecution followed.

The reopening of the investigation does not, in itself, establish wrongdoing by Atiku Abubakar. The allegations remain subject to investigation and any further action by the relevant authorities.
